Kedarkantha Trek: Complete Guide 2022

The Kedarkantha trek (not to be confused with the Kedarnath trek) covers the summit of Kedarkantha, a mountain top in the Garhwal Himalayas lying in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand.

Naturally, the mountain is snow-capped but the trek is famous for being all year round. If you are thinking of getting started with trekking then you are in luck because Kedarkantha is said to be one of the easiest Himalayan treks. And, if you are a seasoned trekker then you may already know that this hike will satisfy you too with its challenges during winter.

Kedarkantha Trek

Quick glance

  • Trek to the Kedarkantha peak (Altitude: 3,810 meters or 12,500ft above sea level)
  • Takes 6-7 days
  • Easy trek for rookies
  • Attractions like zip-line, skiing

Use the following pointers to guide you in your quest for conquering this spectacular peak.

Reaching Sankri Village

To start with the Kedarkantha trek, you have to reach the picturesque Sankri village. You can travel from Dehradun via Mussoorie to this village by road which will take you approximately 6-7  hours depending upon the weather and the season. Both shared taxis and buses can be used to reach Sankri.

Juda ka Talab

Juda ka Talaab is a lake en route to Kedarkantha base camp. From Sankri, you will trek to this lake where you will most likely set up camp overnight.  This lake has mesmerized many as it is equally beautiful in the summers as is in the winters. It is a treat for bird-watchers during summers and freezes completely during winters. Legend says that once Lord Shiva came to meditate near it and when he found himself thirsty he took out one hair strand from his data (hair bun) and wetted it. This action resulted in the formation of this lake.

You can start from this point first thing the next morning.

Base Camp

Once you leave Juda ka Talab you will hike towards the Base Camp. On route, you will be greeted by overlooking mountain peaks like Kala Naag, Bandarpoonch, Ranglana, and Swargarohi. With the beautiful mountains and greenery all around the hike will not disappoint you. This will be around 4km and take you 4 hours or 5. On reaching the base camp, you have to stay for the night in order to leave early for the summit.

Kedarkantha Summit

For the summit, you will have to leave early, like 2 or 3 am in the morning. So by the time you finish your 5-hour long trek, you will witness the sun rising as you summit the peak. The thrill one can get is beyond words! This point makes for great instagrammable photos.

Trekkers usually descend the same day and arrive at the base camp by sundown. Get comfy at camping sites and rest for the next day.s

The return journey is on the same route. So, the next day you will descend from the base camp towards Sankri village. Only this time you will have more room for trivialities as your mission is already accomplished. You can listen to the local myths on the way back and make for life-long memories. Hikers stay at Sankri for the night and leave the next day for Dehradun. While you are at Sankri you can go for zip-lining which is the highest in Uttarakhand. Ice-skiing in Sankri is another adventure sport which you can attempt if you are not tired enough.

Couple of things to keep in mind

  • If you are a beginner in trekking in the Himalayas or trekking in general then this trek will officiate you as a trekker. That being said, it is better that you assess your medical conditions and make sure that you are fit enough to trek. You do not want to put yourself at risk and trouble others in the trek
  • It is of uttermost importance that you take with you warm clothes. Not just any warm clothes but a set. This set will be heavier or lighter according to the season but it goes without saying that trekking in the Himalayas is not to be taken lightly. Except for locals, everybody else needs to acclimatize. There are many checklists available on the internet for different seasons. Please take a thorough look before you embark on the expedition.
  • You should always have a first-aid kit with you. Usually, in such remote areas, hospitals or even clinics are nowhere to be seen for miles.
  • Weigh out from the options of having a trekking guide or going ahead without one. If you are new to trekking or the route, it is best to have a trekking guide.
  • Avoid planning your trek during monsoons as it can get very slippery and pose an unnecessary risk.

Kedarnath is revered in trekking circles for its beauty and for giving beginners a great start in the world of trekking. The fact that it is a summit only makes it more attractive. This place is the right amount of mystique, adventure, culture, and nature. No wonder it is regarded as one of the best treks in Uttarakhand for beginners.
